The VEX IQ competition guides students under age 16 through the full design process, encouraging creativity, perseverance, and strategic thinking as teams start from scratch with a set of challenges and a 6' x 8' field of scoring objects.

From the construction to control of their own robot, students must work together to complete the following tasks:

  • Robot Design: Using VEX plastic construction pieces, students research, model, and build the robot that they will rely on through each endeavor.
  • Teamwork Challenge: Students collaborate to create a strategy that plays to the strengths of two robots and completes the Robot Game missions.
  • Driving Skills Matches: The team must apply their thought out game plan in manipulating field elements to score points before their time runs out.
  • Autonomous Coding Skills Matches: The robot is sent off on its own, trusting rigorously tested programs to carefully complete point-scoring objectives.
  • Engineering Notebook: The record of the team's ideas, triumphs, and lessons, displaying their ability to execute the engineering design process.
